Essential Tasks for Your Fall Cleaning Checklist

Start inside to build momentum. Indoor tasks are easier to control and wins come fast. Once the inside of your home feels clean and tidy, you will be more motivated to handle outdoor jobs.

First, focus on the four main living areas indoors:

  1. Kitchen
  2. Family/living room
  3. Bedrooms
  4. Bathrooms

Then move outside and get the exterior ready for the cold months ahead.

Here are some time-saving tips to help you move through your fall cleaning project quickly:

  • Set a timer for 20 minutes per zone.
  • Keep a tote with supplies, gloves, microfiber cloths and labels.
  • Work from top to bottom, dry to wet. Dust first, and mop last.
  • Toss out expired items as you go for less sorting later.

Kitchen

A seasonal deep clean in the kitchen makes every day smoother. Start with quick wins to build momentum, then move to deeper tasks.

  • Wipe cabinets and pulls: Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Grease builds up near the stove, dry to prevent streaks.
  • Clean oven and stovetop: Run your oven’s clean cycle if safe, or use a baking soda paste to clean your oven. Remove and wash burner grates and knobs.
  • Clean the refrigerator: Empty shelves, toss old condiments and wipe up spills. Put a fresh box of baking soda inside for odors.
  • Clean microwave: Wipe the interior with a vinegar-water solution to dissolve splatters, and clean the exterior with a microfiber cloth for shine.
  • Clean/organize pantry: Check dates on spices, snacks and baking supplies. Group like items such as pasta with pasta, and snacks with snacks. Use clear bins so nothing is hidden.
  • Clean the dishwasher: Run an empty cycle with vinegar to remove buildup, they wipe the interior seals and door for a fresh start.
  • Declutter drawers: Sort gadgets and toss broken tools. Keep what you use weekly within reach.

Living Spaces (Living Room and Family Room)

The living spaces in your home are the center of most homes; keeping them clean and tidy helps to bring comfort and relaxation.

  • Vacuum upholstery/sofas: Use the brush attachment on sofas and chairs. Lift cushions and get into the corners.
  • Wash windows, curtains/treatments: Fabrics trap dust and pollen. Fresh curtains change the whole vibe.
  • Dusting top to bottom: Dust furniture on fans, light shades, shelves, then wipe down baseboards. Finish with a quick floor mop or vacuum.
  • Clear surfaces: Keep only a few favorite items on coffee tables and shelves. Less visual noise means instant calm.
  • Clean carpets, rugs and floors: Vacuum thoroughly and spot-treat stains to refresh high-traffic areas.

Bedrooms

  • Change and wash bed linens: Sheets, duvet cover, shams, and mattress protectors. Wash blankets/pillows for a fully refreshed sleep setup. Vacuum the mattress and rotate it if needed.
  • Closet Switch and organize drawers: Do a seasonal clothes swap by moving summer clothes to bins, then declutter/organize clothes by type.
  • Nightstand reset/declutter: Keep it simple, lamp, book, water. Hide chargers in a small tray.
  • Clean Mirrors, windows and dust the furniture: Do the mirrors first, then dust from high to low to make sure everything stays spotless.

Bathrooms

  • Sinks/toilets/tubs: Clean sinks, toilets, showers, tubs and wash shower curtains or liners.
  • Counters and cabinets: Wipe down and declutter cabinets and countertops. Re-stock essential items like hand soap, tissues and extra towels.
  • Replace linens and towels: Take inventory of linens and towels, toss or repurpose worn-out towels.
  • Clean mirrors, windows and dust: Do the glass first, then dust from high to low to make sure everything stays clean.
  • Mop the floors: Thoroughly clean the floors and make them sparkle.

Outdoors

Now it’s time to take your energy outside to prepare your home for winter. Here’s what to do:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts: Flush with a hose until water flows freely. Add gutter guards if leaves are constant.
  • Windows: Wipe down glass and frames to remove buildup, then seal gaps around them with caulk to prevent drafts.
  • Rake and bag leaves: Keep paths safe and regularly rake leaves or mulch them with a mower to feed your lawn.
  • Clean the grill: Burn off residue, brush the grates and empty the grease tray. Cover the grill or move it out of the elements.
  • Furniture: Clean the frames and cover it. Store cushions in breathable bags.
